Thornton neighborhood with convenient access to abundant recreation
Located off the busy intersection of Colorado Boulevard and East 104th Avenue, Wyndemere is a small but dense neighborhood in the Denver suburb of Thornton. While close to conveniences like an elementary school, shopping and dining, the area stands out with its green space. A long, narrow prairie dog habitat with paths and streams splits the neighborhood, which sits across the road from a multi-purpose park that hosts signature events like the Denver area’s Water Lantern Festival. Otherwise, locals say the neighborhood reflects Thornton’s overall character. The community is the area’s main appeal for life-long resident Nicole Riley. “Even people I just meet on the street or in the store, they’re always chill or have something nice to say,” says Riley, who lives a few minutes from the neighborhood. “Also, I like the open space.”
Late 20th century Traditionals along quiet suburban streets
Homes here line quiet suburban streets and cul-de-sacs. While they typically occupy lots no larger than a quarter-acre, properties still make enough room for groups of trees and backyard amenities like children’s swingsets and slides. The neighborhood’s architecture consists of Traditionals and a few ranch-style homes from the late 20th century, several of which have undergone renovations. A few homes also show custom accents like half-timbered exteriors. Single-family homes mainly go from about $470,000 to $600,000.
Neighboring wildlife habitat and Carpenter Park
The Riverdale Open Space and Prairie Dog Habitat runs the length of the neighborhood, and its walking paths continue south to the nearby Grandview Ponds area — a popular bass fishing spot. In addition to the burrowing rodents, deer, waterfowl and even some herons like to spend time here. At Carpenter Park, warm days bring joggers and bikers to its trails and excited children to the colorful playground and splash pad. The park’s amenities also draw skaters, canoers and paddle boaters. The park is also home to the Carpenter Recreation Center, where the facilities include an indoor pool. “They’ve left a lot of land for open space and made it into some cool parks. It’s a great little getaway right in town there,” says Matt Potter, a Realtor with HomeSmart.
Ringing in the holidays at Carpenter Park
Carpenter Park is one of Thornton’s event destinations. One event here is Thornton WinterFest, which occurs over a weekend in December and features attractions like lighted Christmas trees. Other activities include ice skating on the pond, ice carving and a morning 5K run. In July, booths cover the park’s fields during the Independence Day celebration, while numerous glowing lanterns dot the lake during the Water Lantern Festival.
Pho, drinks and live music around Colorado and East 104th
The area around Colorado Boulevard and East 104th Avenue has several local shops, restaurants and chains like a Safeway grocery store. The Vietnamese Cafe’s menu ranges from fresh rice paper spring rolls to various pho options. Local Mexican restaurant chain 3 Margaritas has a location here, while the Trailside Saloon offers a late-night hangout for drinks and hosts live music. “There’s pretty much anything and everything there,” Potter says about the dining scene.
Riverdale Elementary’s STEM activities and nature clubs
Riverdale Elementary School is outside the neighborhood and gets a B-minus grade from Niche. The school’s library has an Imagination Station, which intends to pique student interest in areas like STEM. Extracurriculars include a club called Backyard Explorers that offers activities taking advantage of the area’s natural scenery. Club members typically go on outings to look at local flora and fauna. Students here may then attend Shadow Ridge Middle School and Thornton High School, which respectively get B-minus and C-plus grades from Niche.
East 104th and I-25 commute
The RTD — Regional Transportation District — has several bus stops along Colorado Boulevard and East 104th Avenue. The East 104th thoroughfare goes directly to Interstate 25, which provides a path to downtown Denver about 16 miles south. The neighborhood is about 3 miles from Interstate 76, which drivers can also take to go to Denver. Located about 19 miles east, the Denver International Airport is the region’s hub for commercial flights. Thornton’s HCA HealthONE Mountain Ridge is the nearest hospital.
