A neighborhood that once suffered from decades of neglect is becoming a vibrant neighborhood with tree-lined streets and budget-friendly homes. East Toledo offers residents walkability, open enrollment in schools, restaurants and proximity to downtown. Walking towards the east, residents may notice smoke rising from the stacks at the Cleveland-Cliffs iron and steel company. Locals will find it hard not to notice the scenic view made possible by the Glass City Riverwalk project when heading west towards the Maumee River.
Commuting made easy
Downtown Toledo is a 2-mile drive, and locals can get there by taking Woodville Road across the Anthony Wayne Bridge (also called the High Level Bridge) or Interstate 280 over the scenic Veterans Glass City Skyway. The Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority bus makes several stops in East Toledo, increasing accessibility to downtown and outlying areas. Mercy Health's St. Charles Hospital is less than 2 miles east, and it's a 45-mile drive to the Detroit Metro Airport via interstates 75 and 275.

East Toledo has its share of popular eateries. Longtime Toledo resident and Realtor Valdy Perez with Key Realty, who recently sold a home here, recommends Central Hotdog on Front Street. "That place has been there forever, and it's good," he says. Real Seafood Company on the water offers river and city views, and the Old Bag of Nails Pub serves Irish-inspired fare like Reuben sandwiches. For lunch, locally owned Michael's Café & Bakery offers homemade pastries, soups and sandwiches in the historic Weber Block building. Toledo Food Market is a go-to for groceries.

Toledo Park offers lots of greenery and amenities
Residents can choose from several parks in and around East Toledo. Named for the city's history in the glass industry, Glass City Metropark was completed in 2023 on the banks of the Maumee River as part of a revitalization effort. The area offers event space, a boardwalk and play areas. At Navarre Park, kids can play on a newly constructed playground, and adults can play pickleball or bike along the Navarre Park Trail. Weller Playground is nestled within a lush forest, offering visitors a serene and picturesque environment in which to enjoy various recreational activities. Weller Lake serves as a gathering spot for fishing enthusiasts. The lake is well-stocked with a variety of fish species, making it an excellent place for anglers of all skill levels.
The newly constructed Glass City Metro Park will offer activities for all ages including a pool.

The price is right
"You can get a lot of bang for your buck here," says Toledo home investor Raliat Thomas, a Realtor with Serenity Realty since 2021. "Investors are buying properties and fixing them up to resell, so there are some nice homes on the market." Bungalows with Dutch Colonial and Craftsman influences, ranch-style homes and American foursquares sit close together, many converted to rental duplexes or apartments. Prices range from $22,000 to $168,000. An 1,800 square foot townhome with four bedrooms runs $70,000; while a completely remodeled 1,501 square foot house with three bedrooms sells for $129,000. Most homes sit on small lots of about 1/8 acre, with narrow, fenced-in backyards and either attached or detached garages. Most homes have private driveways, and the streets, though narrow, have sidewalks and allow for parking.
Homeowners are actively renovating homes throughout East Toledo.
