Suburbia with lots of amenities

Down river from Downtown Toledo, Glendale-Heatherdowns is a community for homebuyers who want the conveniences of an urban neighborhood with the tranquility of a suburban setting. Winding tree-lined streets, some more densely forested than others, reveal a mix of mostly mid-century homes. Some homeowners have taken care to establish front yard gardens with ring gardens being popular. “We have a lot of other suburban areas, but you get a lot more house for the price here,” says Keith Degnan, Realtor with Key Realty. “There are big yards and mature trees – it’s absolutely beautiful in the fall.” At any given time, one will see kids playing in those yards, playing basketball in the driveway, leaping into leaf piles or riding bikes through the family-oriented community. “Houses are usually on the market less than a month here. Two weeks or less in general,” Degnan says.

Get more house for the money

Brick-faced bungalows and ranch-style homes predominate the landscape, while other styles are sprinkled in. Home prices are less than those in neighboring Southwyck. A buyer can get a three-bedroom Colonial-style house in need of renovation for $119,000, while a newer four-bedroom split-level costs $250,000. Lots vary in size from an eighth of an acre to one-third of an acre, and paved driveways lead to attached garages.

Young people can start their education at Harvard Elementary School, which has a C grade from Niche. Gateway Middle School scored a B-plus. Bowsher High School, which scores a B-minus, has the Bowsher Athletic Hall of Fame, which recognizes school alumni, citizen contributors and retired Bowsher athletic staff members who have supported the Bowsher Athletic Program. A banquet dinner is held each year to announce the winners. The Heatherdowns Branch Library offers a variety of classes like chess, Zumba and storytime as well as providing after-school meals and a High School Equivalency (HSE) program in conjunction with Owens Community College.

Green spaces in Glass City

A portion of Swan Creek Metropark bleeds into the neighborhood, providing the opportunity for residents to connect with nature. This 441-acre enclave of green space is a haven for migratory birds and wildlife. Additional attractions include trails, scenic overlooks, a swinging bridge, picnic facilities and two playgrounds. Locals can take a vigorous morning walk in Heatherdowns Park, which is within walking distance of most homes. Its amenities include a playground, picnic sites and baseball and basketball courts. Glass City Dog Park, which requires membership, was created as a safe space for dogs to run free and socialize with other canine companions. Fishing enthusiasts like to take advantage of the Walleye Run in the spring when these freshwater fish migrate from Lake Erie to the Maumee River to spawn. Golfers can join two golf clubs which occupy the community’s west end. Heather Downs Country Club is semi-private and South Toledo Golf Club is private. The Toledo Zoo & Aquarium, just outside the eastern border, has been a family-favorite destination for over 100 years. In addition to its over 10,000 individual animals from 720 species, the zoo offers attractions, like the Aerial Adventure Course, animal habitats, seasonal gardening tips, concerts and more.

In the heart of the neighborhood is Toledo Commons, a shopping center along Glendale Avenue dominated by Wal-Mart. Locals can pick up groceries at the Kroger on Glendale Avenue or take Airport Highway northwest to Home Depot, Target and Sam’s Club, all conveniently located in Spring Meadows Place. Particularly on weekends, crowds gather at Doc Watson’s sports bar for appetizers, gourmet burgers, sandwiches and beer. “Doc Watson’s is a gathering point for really good bar food. Locals meet up there to watch Ohio State games,” Degnan says. J’Mae’s Home Cooking serves up soul food classics with freshly made cakes and pies for dessert.
