Scenic living on Maui’s West Coast
With the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop, Napili-Honokowai is more than just a scenic resort town on Maui’s West Coast. “We have green grass, green palm trees, and a little bit more rainbows than surrounding areas,” says Anita White, local Realtor at Broker Island Sotheby’s International Realty. “The area has top-notch golfing, beautiful outdoor recreation, and a strong sense of community.”

Recreation by land, sea, or helicopter
Recreation is endless in Napili-Honokowai as the pristine coastline offers year-round activities ranging from snorkeling to surfing. Residents can head to Honokowai Beach Park to enjoy a relaxing day under the sun on the public beachfront. If recreation on land isn’t enough, thrill seekers can take to the seas or the skies via guided boat and helicopter tours of the expansive coastline. Scuba diving and snorkeling are very popular in the area, and multiple companies like In2Scuba Diving Maui Dive Co. provide lessons and guided tours of the ocean reefs and wildlife. Maui is famous for its golf, and multiple courses surround Napili-Honokowai, including the Plantation Course, which has been home to the PGA Sentry Tournament on Champions since 1999.

Luxury Vacation Condos
Napili-Honokowai’s housing differs between waterfront condos and single-family houses back from the shore. Home seekers may find condos in the Napili Sunset Resort ranging from $400,000 to $900,000, depending on location and square footage. “Vacation rental condos on the ocean are gorgeous,” says White. “The neighborhood has mostly single-family homes, ranging from two to three bedrooms, all within walking distance to the beach.” Palm tree-lined streets are common, and most residences have manicured front lawns with heavy foliage. Smaller, two-bedroom bungalows begin pricing for $1 million, while larger Polynesian-style builds can top $5 million.

Fresh Hawaiian Produce
The Napili farmer’s market recently reopened in March of 2024 following an unforeseen closure due to the wildfires of 2023. Locals head to Napili Plaza every Saturday to peruse the assortment of fresh island produce and artisanal crafts under the ambiance of live, Hawaiian-style music.
Open-air eateries along the beach
After a long day on the beach, residents can choose from various restaurant options ranging from fast food chains to waterfront dining. Duke’s Beach House Maui is an open-air beach eatery in the Honua Kai Resort and offers island cuisine under the décor of surfboards and tikis. Locals head to Maui Brewing Company Kahana for its original beers and tasty coconut porter. Retail shopping is centered in the Kahana Gateway Shopping Center, and the Whalers General Store provides fresh produce and groceries to the area. Seafood lovers can enjoy the fresh catches of the Pacific Ocean at Miso Phat Sushi.

Driving down Hawaii Route 30 will connect one to the rest of Maui and provide scenic views of the nearby islands of Lanai and Moloka’i. Hawaii Route 30 wraps around West Maui and can be accessed anywhere in the neighborhood. The only way on and off the island is by plane, and two airports serve residents. Kapalua Airport is a regional airport on Maui’s west side, and most flights originate from commuter airports in the other Hawaiian Islands. For international travel and a wider flight selection, Kahului Airport is 30 miles away and offers direct flights to multiple cities in the lower 48.

Maui Wildfires
The 2023 Maui Wildfires directly affected the area, with many shops and restaurants closing due to damage. The wildfire burned much of Lahaina, a town just south of Napili-Honokowai. A distribution center was set up in Honokowai Beach, and numerous fundraiser efforts were organized to help those affected. “The whole community came together after the fire,” says White. Tourism to the area resumed in November 2023, but many parts still remain affected by the devastating fire.
