Homes surrounded by nature near the Shawangunk Ridge
Walker Valley branches off Route 52 in upstate New York, sheathed with the foliage of the region just east of where the road begins a steady climb to the Shawangunk Ridge. Situated between the ridge’s bedrock and the busier streets of Pine Bush, the hamlet is almost entirely comprised of homes set deep within the trees. With a population of just over 1,200 as of the 2020 census, Walker Valley provides an escape surrounded by nature in the Empire State wilderness and began as a retreat area occupied by cabins.
“That’s how it originated,” says Matthew Gibbs, an associate broker with Keller Williams Realty Hudson United. “There was a lot of hunting and fishing and a lot of outdoor activities that people would do. It was the location where people had cabins in the woods, and they would try to escape and get reconnected with wildlife and with the land that we live on.” Despite the remoteness, it’s just 5 miles east to Pine Bush for restaurants and retail outlets, while numerous preserves and forests await in the opposite direction.
State forests, campgrounds and sports facilities
Immediately west of Walker Valley, the Shawangunk Ridge State Forest spans more than 1,400 acres and is lined with trails, lookouts over the landscape, campsites and areas to fish. Down Route 52 to the east, Verkeerderkill Park has a ballfield, soccer field and more sports facilities, and just north Boulder Point Campground sits on 40 acres of land. “It’s definitely a more rural area where you can enjoy being surrounded by farms and open area,” Gibbs says, “and have a clear view of the night sky and be able to enjoy star-watching at night and hiking trails during the day.”
Just over five miles north of Walker Valley itself, the Sam’s Point portion of Minnewaska State Park sits in the highest area of the mountains. Visitors cast lines in Lake Maratanza, wander through the pine barrens or take in the sights of Verkeerder Kill Falls. Others find Zen at the Blue Cliff Monastery, which offers retreats and events. Other state forests and preserves sit west of Walker Valley, with the Roosa Gap State Forest and the Wurtsboro Ridge State Forest stretching southward.

Isolated homes on sparse streets
Tranquil, secluded streets wind throughout the neighborhood, most of them offshoots of Route 52, with many homes set back from the road and enveloped in the tree canopies. “Walker Valley’s a very rural community,” Gibbs says. “It kind of separates itself from the more densely populated areas like Ellenville, Middletown or Pine Bush, but you still have great access to a lot of services.” Architecture in Walker Valley primarily consists of ranch-style homes, colonials and even some more elaborate layouts. More expansive properties include large farmhouses and cabin retreats.
Prices typically range from $350,000 to $500,000, though smaller properties may sell for under $200,000 and larger homes can list for upwards of $600,000. Costs can also depend on whether renovations are needed. Regardless of location within the neighborhood, homes often have substantial space between them. “Walker Valley is just great if you want to live in a very rural setting and have access to the mountains and beautiful views and that kind of stuff,” Gibbs says. “It’s going to offer a little bit more of a slower pace.”

A southern-food stop along Route 52
Outlets in Walker Valley are sparse on Route 52. “It’s convenient to some degree, which is a relative term when you live upstate,” Gibbs says. “It’s definitely that little upstate, quaint kind of hamlet. It doesn’t offer much in regard to services – there’s one gas station with a convenience store, there’s one restaurant and that’s it. There’s not a lot to offer, but if you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle, that’s where you’d want to go.”
Third & Company Lakeside is that lone eatery in the neighborhood, specializing in American and southern fare while also hosting events like weddings. "That property goes back to 1860, the restaurant itself," says Joe Russek, the owner of the restaurant. "At one point, they harvested ice out of there, so we wanted to mimic the concepts of things it's been over the years. The idea was always that the history is always there." The building had also been used as a church, stable and more. "It's super secluded,” Russek says. “Our goal is to make it a food destination." There’s also a United States Postal Service stop on Route 52, as well as a veterinary hospital. For more options, residents head about 5 miles east into Pine Bush, where there’s several local restaurants as well as a Hannaford for grocery shopping.

A neighborhood removed from major thoroughfares
Walker Valley’s remoteness lends itself to a respite from heavy traffic, but it’s not too far of a drive to major state roads. To the west, Route 209 sits about 7 miles away, spanning New York and Pennsylvania while linking with areas like Kingston. The New York State Thruway is accessible just under 20 miles east by way of Route 52, which connects many of New York’s major cities. It’s just under 100 miles north or south to Albany and New York City, respectively. “You’re probably 25 minutes from Route 17, which goes east-to-west through Orange and Sullivan,” Gibbs says. “It’s probably 30 minutes to Kingston and 20 minutes to Middletown or Newburg.”
