A riverside community in upstate New York

About three-quarters of the way up the Wallkill River’s 88-mile path, the hamlet of the same name sits on the water’s edge in Upstate New York. With an agrarian landscape surrounding a network of residential streets, it branches eastward off the river; the river itself is unique for flowing northward despite its nearby counterparts running in the opposite direction. “The hamlet got its name from the river,” says Matthew Gibbs, an associate broker with Keller Williams Realty Hudson United who also lives in Wallkill. “It’s on this nice bend in the river, so you have an eddy and a little waterfall, which is very picturesque. A lot of people fish in the Wallkill River, right around the hamlet.” Kayakers and canoers frequent the relatively calm waters, as do anglers looking to catch smallmouth bass or walleye. Those who stay on dry land can simply walk out onto the bridge spanning the river on Bruyn Turnpike, where the waterfall is visible from weathered stone barriers. "It's a quaint village with almost everything that you need within that village -- a hardware store, some pizza places, restaurants, bars and a little park,” says Jodi Gillespie, broker and owner of Gillespie Real Estate. “The unique thing about the village is that the Wallkill River goes through it, as well. It adds more charm to it."

Recreation on the water and terra firma

The Wallkill River is the neighborhood’s primary outlet for recreation, with smaller craft the more popular mode of maritime transportation; larger boats are uncommon on the river’s waters. "If you're going to put a rowboat, you have to go in the calmer areas,” Gillespie says. “There's more canoeing, kayaking and fishing." On dry land, the Popp Memorial Park sits along the river in southern Wallkill and has picnic tables, a boat launch for those heading onto the water and a pavilion. Ice skaters also carve their way around the park, depending on the weather. Wallkill Town Park is also nearby, and the neighborhood is also the site of part of the Walden-Wallkill Rail Trail gap, where after a 3-mile paved span it stops at Bona Ventura Avenue; up Railroad Avenue, it continues northward for just over a mile in an unpaved stretch that is popular with horseback riders and bikers. It’s also open to skiing in the winter, as well as inline skating and walking.

Restaurant variety close to the Wallkill River

Most eateries in the neighborhood are concentrated along a bend in Wallkill Avenue close to the river. Pasquale’s piping-hot pizza and Dos Amigos II’s menu of Mexican fare are among the restaurants along the street, while Hudson Valley Chocolates crafts handmade desserts just up the road. A little farther from the water, the Parkview House Restaurant & Tavern serves up American comfort food while hosting live music, trivia, karaoke and other weekly or biweekly events. “The ‘Park House’ is a very local place,” Gibbs says. Wallkill is also known for a pair of wineries and vineyards situated in the southeastern part of the neighborhood, including Magnanini Winery, restaurant and distillery. “Magnanini is the biggest draw closest to the hamlet of Wallkill,” Gibbs says. The tasting room and restaurant are open five days a week and feature a different menu each time, and Magnanini even puts on showcases ranging from movie nights to Friday pasta nights to a cheesy ravioli parties.” Grocery shoppers head about 4 miles south to a Hannaford in Walden, while Target and Walmart both sit about 12 miles southeast in Newburgh.

Local celebrations and sports leagues

Each September, the Weekend of Wallkill event incorporates a vendor fair, local craftsmanship, games, contests and more into its two-day run, as well as spotlighting photography and art. The Andries DuBois House sits on Wallkill Avenue close to the river. It has stood for over 200 years and plans are in place to use it as a museum. Clover Hill Farm sprawls across the eastern side of the neighborhood and serves as a spot for boarding horses and supplying riding lessons, even keeping carriages on-site as well. The town of Wallkill itself also offers recreational organizations and programs, which include Little League baseball, an adult softball league, a local golf club and more; the Little League complex sits near the center of the neighborhood and encompasses four baseball diamonds.

Residential living surrounded by farmland

Wallkill’s housing sector runs across the middle of the neighborhood, with swaths of farmland to the north and south. “There’s a lot of smaller homes,” Gibbs says. “Wallkill is predominantly smaller ranches, bi-levels and colonials. There aren’t any really big mansions. You’re not going to find anything like that in Wallkill.” The ranch-style homes and colonials are among the most popular housing styles in the neighborhood, as well as Cape Cods. Some homes sit on larger properties, and pricing often falls between $350,000 and $500,000. Larger homes, or more sizable properties overall, can sell for upwards of the $500,000 mark.

Interstate access to the east

Residents have to head southward to Newburgh or northward to New Paltz for access to the New York State Thruway east of Wallkill. The highway is the main artery running around the state of New York and either town is over 10 miles away, but still a quick drive from the neighborhood. “It’s conveniently located,” Gibbs says. “You can get anywhere you want in 10 to 15 minutes. I can be on the Thruway in Newburgh about 12 minutes from the hamlet of Wallkill.” Albany sits more than 80 miles north of Wallkill, while New York City is just over 75 miles south.

A three-school system within Wallkill

Education for Wallkill students is entirely contained within the neighborhood, as grade-school education begins at Ostrander Elementary School. Ostrander Elementary scores a B with Niche and runs from kindergarten through sixth grade. John G. Borden Middle School sits less than half a mile away and spans seventh and eighth grades, garnering a B-minus from Niche. Students then head to Wallkill Senior High School, which gets a B-plus and offers sports including skiing, golf and lacrosse.
