The Douglass community of Washington, D.C., is named after the famed abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who lived just 2 miles away in the Anacostia neighborhood. As prices rise and new construction pops up, the community still maintains its rich culture.

Amongst the streets of Douglass, you won’t feel like you’re only 4 miles away from downtown D.C. You’ll immediately notice the flush tree-lined sidewalks and murals in the parks giving the neighborhood a refreshing brightness. You can find a handful of older homes, but for the most part, you’ll see many newer town houses from the 2000s and beyond. For the neighborhood's median price of $430,000, you can get a four-bedroom town house with a little bit of yard space out front. If you have a larger budget in mind, you’ll find a 2000s-built four-bedroom town house with about the same size yard as the three-bedroom for about $500,000. For $640,000, there are contemporary town houses available, bearing exteriors that mimic the brick facades of historic D.C. town houses. "These newer developments are becoming more popular, and there's more coming." says Sonya Abney, a Realtor who's sold multiple homes in the area. If you prefer a detached single-family home, there are some older options in the neighborhood built in the 1920s and ‘30s. These Craftsman and Foursquare style homes go for about $500,000 and offer large yards compared to their town house counterparts. Most residents are commuters looking to get closer to downtown, so there’s always competition. “Like every community in D.C., homes here go quick,” says Abney “You have to put in an offer as soon as your heart is set on one.”

Students in Douglass are a part of the District of Columbia Public Schools system. They begin their education at Turner Elementary School and then move on to Johnson Middle School. Both schools are graded a C-minus by Niche. They are also conveniently located within the neighborhood, making them an easy walk or bus ride from most homes. Students round out their education a couple of miles outside the neighborhood at Anacostia High School, which Niche graded a C-minus as well. Anacostia’s Public Leadership Academy offers an industry-based program teaching students to be agents of social innovation through government and law.

There isn’t much recreational space in the neighborhood, so locals flock to the Douglass Community Center for its outdoor amenities. The beautiful murals of civil rights leaders display the neighborhood’s vibrant sense of community. The center has something for almost any activity, like a basketball court, playground, pool and tennis court. They also allow people to host events there, so it’s a great place to get involved with the community.

Sitting just outside the southern edge of the neighborhood, you can get all your necessities at The Shops at Park Village. You can knock out your grocery shopping at the Giant or grab a bite to eat at one of your favorite chain restaurants like Chipotle. While you’re here, make sure to stop by Like That 2 Barber Shop for a fresh cut. This family-owned chain started with parents helping their son's dream of owning a barbershop come true and has since spread to multiple locations. The Like That barbershop family believes that supporting the community is key, so every year, they provide school supplies for local youth and distribute food baskets during the holidays.

It’s rare to find a big city neighborhood that maintains its local roots, but that’s exactly what you’ll find in the community of Douglass.
