Calm, tidy area with steep terrain near downtown West Orange
Lourdes takes its name from Lady of the Lourdes Catholic Church, which sits on the tapered lot where Eagle Rock Avenue and Harrison Avenue meet. Some of the homes are placed on sloped yards, and Lourdes is sometimes colloquially referred to as "Down the Hill," in reference to West Orange’s rather steep terrain. After all, the neighborhood adjoins Eagle Rock Reservation, which affords views of Manhattan, 20 miles away. There’s a calm atmosphere, and the landscaping is kept neat and tidy, which is similar to neighboring Llewellyn Park. “Lourdes is high end like Llewellyn Park,” says Kimberly Latortue, Realtor with Weichert Realtors. “You’d call it a nice suburb.” Inventor Thomas Edison’s legacy looms large in the area, with his former estate nearby. His factories on Main Street brought Irish residents from Newark, and Latortue says that the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the biggest annual celebrations.
Many of the homes in Lourdes are on sloped lots at the base of the Watchung Mountains.

1920s and 30s colonials in Lourdes
Homebuyers can find simple ranch-style properties ranging from $300,000 to $440,000. But most of the homes here are multi-story and contain three to four bedrooms. Boxy, colonial-influenced styles from the 1920s and 1930s range from $480,000 to $700,000. Split-level homes and even more eclectic styles like Tudor sell for $715,000 to $755,000. With a few exceptions, most of the street names refer to the neighborhood’s sloped terrain, such as Woodside Terrace and Fairmount Terrace. Even the westernmost thoroughfare, Eagle Rock Avenue, leads directly into the 400-acre reservation of the same name.
Split level homes are commonly found with larger lots in Lourdes.

Views of Manhattan from Eagle Rock Reservaton
Residents are surrounded by park spaces on all sides, the largest of which is Eagle Rock Reservation. Hiking enthusiasts like it for the extensive trails and views of Manhattan. But it’s equally a place for picnics or a visit to the 9/11 memorial. The Highlawn restaurant is also on site, providing an upscale retreat amid the rugged scenery. Nishuane Park offers more of a traditional park setup and contains a swimming pool and playground. Visitors can stroll the walking path or engage in sports. There are ball fields, basketball courts and a half dozen tennis courts. The Montclair Jazz Festival, one of the biggest local and regional events of the year, happens here every summer. Colgate Field isn’t far off, either, and has a swimming pool next to sports facilities.

Shopping and dining in West Orange, Montclair and Cedar Grove
Not only is the confluence of Harrison Avenue and Eagle Rock Avenue the site for Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, it’s also the entry point for the dining scene and downtown West Orange. Mexican food is available at Folklore Artisanal Taco, a small cozy space with colorful décor. Just a couple blocks away is Llewellyn Parq Bar & Grill, which is more focused on drinks and comfort food. Main Street opens up here, and diners can explore Italian, African, Japanese and other global cuisines. Super Supermarket conveniently holds everything from fresh produce to frozen goods, and West Orange Family Pharmacy presents an alternative to CVS.
Residents also benefit from proximity to downtown Montclair and, another mile north of that, Cedar Grove. “Pompton Avenue in Cedar Grove has many businesses, malls, grocers, places to eat and plenty of locally owned shops,” says Rhonda Myers, interim president at First Presbyterian Church of Verona.

A walkable neighborhood that opens onto Main Street
Lourdes is shielded from traffic passing through, and with abundant sidewalks, it’s easy to get around on foot. And since the neighborhood empties out to Main Street in downtown West Orange, it’s possible to maintain this walkable lifestyle when seeking food or the amenities at Colgate Field. Several bus stops line this portion of Main, too, so riders can go deeper south into downtown West Orange or up north past Nishuane Park, to downtown Montclair. Residents are also 1.5 miles from the West Orange train station, which takes commuters to Penn Station in less than an hour. Those who prefer to drive can get to Manhattan in about an hour by hopping on Interstate 280.
