Quiet suburban living in Hartford
Tucked along the banks of the White River, Hartford Village has a rich history dating back to the late 18th century when it served as the main industrial hub for the town of Hartford. Mills lined the riverfront until the early 20th century when development shifted east to White River Junction. Following the decline of industrial development, Hartford Village became the quiet residential enclave that it remains today. “Hartford itself is made up of five villages, and there are a lot of different communities between those five villages,” says Margaret Marion, administrative assistant for the Hartford Parks and Recreation Department. While Hartford Village offers relaxed suburban living on the edge of its namesake town, residents are just 2 miles from a vibrant commercial corridor in White River Junction.
A mix of Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes
The Hartford Village Historic District preserves the village’s original homes, many of which sit along Maple Street. Gable-front houses built for mill workers date to the late 19th century, and many historic homes have been converted into multi-family rental properties. The historic district also contains the Second Congregational Church, a Federal-style building now home to the Greater Hartford United Church of Christ. Outside the historic district, homebuyers will find a mix of Colonial Revival, ranch-style and bi-level homes built throughout the second half of the 20th century. Properties are spread out along quiet residential streets and cul-de-sacs where asphalt gives way to winding gravel driveways. Tree-lined lots average just over three-quarters of an acre, giving residents plenty of room for a deck or patio with distant views of Mount Ascutney. Prices for single-family homes in the village typically range from $350,000 for a two-bedroom raised ranch to $650,000 for a four-bedroom Colonial Revival.
