About Yeadon, PA

A community with a history of patriotism

Residents of Yeadon take Flag Day seriously, as the borough is the birthplace of the national holiday, thanks to resident William T. Kerr, who founded the American Flag Day Association in 1888. Today, locals move to the area to be close to Philadelphia without dealing with the fast-paced life of living in the city. “Some people are born there and stick around, but some move there to get away from the city,” says AJ Simms, a local Realtor with RealtyMark Associates (Center City). “It’s about five minutes from Philly.” Residents might settle down in the quiet area or choose Yeadon for its many public commuter options.

Dutch Colonial options surrounded by brick twins

Most people live in stone and brick twins built between the 1920s and 1950s, typically split by a driveway or a few feet of yard space. They come in various architectural styles. However, Colonial and Dutch Colonial are among the most common. While some feature narrow backyards, others have back alleyways with attached garages and a deck where residents can lounge outside their homes. Residents can still find single-family homes subtly blended into Yeadon’s grid-pattern streets. “People of all ages live in Yeadon. I’ve helped empty nesters buy and sell homes there, too,” Simms says. Whether it’s a Colonial, split-level or ranch-style single-family home, homebuyers can expect to pay anywhere from $250,000 to $400,000. If homeowners don’t mind a little work, they can find a twin that needs repair for about $175,000. Future residents who prefer fully renovated and move-in-ready twins can find options for $215,000 to $300,000. Most residents own their homes, but renters can find opportunities or available apartment units to stake their flag in this community.

Taking the bus, trolley or train

Yeadon is separated from Southwest Philadelphia by Cobbs Creek Park, an 851-acre oasis with miles of nature trails. “People use the buses that run there to commute to work,” Simms says. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has several bus stops, the trolley line that runs by the Yeadon Loop station and the Media/Wawa train line. The train takes locals to Center City Philadelphia, about 7 miles away, or several other western suburbs along the Media/Wawa Line. Drivers use nearby U.S. Route 13 to get to Center City after a 30-minute drive.

Experience a Flag Day like no other

As the home of Flag Day, the town goes all out for the holiday, honoring the legacy of Kerr. With Church Lane shut down, locals flock together to celebrate the special occasion with live music, a car show and vendors every June. But don’t forget your lawn chairs because it wouldn’t be a truly American celebration without fireworks to cap off the night.

Coconut Breeze Cuisine serves up Jamaican dishes

Several homes line Church Lane, along with most of the town’s independent businesses. From car repair shops to restaurants, locals can find small businesses to support. Phat Deli & Market offers snacks and hoagies, while the family-run Coconut Breeze Cuisine lets locals taste Jamaican dishes. The Crab Tavern is one of the only spots for locals to meet up for a drink after work, and the tavern attracts visitors looking for a great night of dancing and karaoke. “Nightlife is coming back, but most people drive outside the neighborhood and into the city for restaurants,” Simms says. For essentials, locals can stop by the Farmer International Market or Giant. A Dollar General and CVS sit across the street from the Farmer International Market for those who need last-minute ingredients or snacks.

Making a splash at the Nile Swim Club

At any other time of the year, residents can spend their time outdoors at local parks. Yeadon Community Park is a popular spot for kids to hit the playground and play basketball. Nile Swim Club sits nearby, where visitors can jump in the pool to cool off. The swim club was the first one in the country owned and operated by African Americans who created it after being denied access to a swim club in the 1950s. Not only is it open for swimming, but the club also offers fitness programs with Zumba and yoga classes, a community garden and youth basketball clinics.

From hospitals to long-standing churches

The Holy Cross Cemetery sits centrally in the neighborhood and covers a wide area. It was established in 1890, and the first American golfer to win the U.S. Open is buried there. Due to its size, residents often drive past it or live across the street. Residents also have access to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital along Main Street. The hospital features an emergency room, cardiac specialists and a Certified Primary Stroke center. Multiple churches, including a catholic church that has been standing for over 100 years, sit around the neighborhood.
