Having grown up in an established neighborhood on Fielding Street in Alexandria, Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School (Mount Vernon Woods) serves around 600 students from preschool through sixth grade. Over the years, since its opening in 1965, the school has enjoyed renovations to expand classrooms, improve indoor air and upgrade library technology, as well as a recent renovation to further accommodate growth. Currently, the school has a fully equipped media center, more than 20 mobile labs, interactive SMART whiteboards in all grade level classrooms, an art room, three music rooms and a resource room with desktop computers. As a Title I school, Mount Vernon Woods’ mission is to be “a collaborative community valuing diversity while fostering flexible thinking, positive relationships and ensuring high expectations for all students.” In addition to its special education programs, the school offers advanced academic programs for high achievers and English for speakers of other languages support services. They also offer a Spanish Foreign Language in Elementary Schools/Language Through Content program that helps students learn a world language through science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. For further enrichment, Mount Vernon Woods students can participate in band, strings and safety patrol, or choose from a variety of after-school classes and clubs including Saturday Academy, Student Leadership Academy and running club.

My son has been in this school for five years and the truth since we changed the director we have noticed many changes to our school of course for the benefit of children.We are very happy for all the changes and academic progress that the children have made as a result.

Mount Vernon Woods has had a significant change over the past year. They have a new principal that has removed many of the teachers that were the problem in the past. My child is in the 5th grade and has a wonderful teacher, she is always available for questions and keeps you informed on the homewor...

So far, I am happy with the school environment. My kid is tested very often. Daily homework is given at Kindergarten. Teachers held meeting to individually report how kid is performing and where he/she needs to work.
