AHB Community School offers a progressive approach to learning that is focused on cultivating creativity, authenticity and joy. At this “micro-school,” located in Austin’s Hyde Park neighborhood, students learn in mixed-age classrooms with a student-to-teacher ratio of 11-to-1. The school’s shortened week—three days for kindergarten and first graders, and four days for second through eighth graders—allows students the flexibility and time to have rich and engaged home lives or pursue outside passions. Sixth through eighth grade students have the option to add Fridays to work on community service initiatives, personal projects or prepare for high school admission. At AHB, curriculum is thematic and interdisciplinary. Students take a deep dive into a topic and examine it from many angles. They tackle hands-on, collaborative projects and display their work in creative portfolios. The word “community” is as important as the word “school” in AHB Community School’s name. Caregivers help the school thrive by volunteering to assist in the classroom, fundraising, organizing annual events and leading after-school enrichment activities such as art, dance, yoga and more. A unique philosophy and a close-knit, dynamic community make AHB Community School an exceptional choice for kindergarten through eighth grade education in Hyde Park.

AHB is an awesome K-5th experience, centered on project-based learning, and integrated studies. High parent involvement and great sense of community. Not much racial/cultural diversity, and no field for sports, those things are missing. But do walk to a local park once a month for "park day", which is nice.

Warning! As a former teacher of 10 yrs and a parent of a student who attended this school I'm very concerned. Because when students in the youngest classrooms are attacked or bullied, the administration does not apply discipline, or act competently, to make the school safe.

My experience with AHB started 7 years ago when I first toured with my daughter. Unfortunately while AHB felt like a great fit, the shorter school week was not going to fit with our work schedules. We opted to join another school and were very happy for several years. However as my daughter got olde...

A few years ago my 3rd grader was struggling in public school and absolutely hated school. We tried everything and realized it just wasn't working. We needed to make a change. I had heard about AHB through friends and decided to move him there. Now he is so happy and actually looks forward to going...

This approach to learning should be the standard. Coming from a play based learning pre-school, this is the natural progression to cultivate future growth in all aspects of a child. I feel lucky to have found AHB and will be happy to have my next two little ones join the school when they old enough.
