Dawson Elementary on South First Street in Austin is a public elementary school that’s part of the Austin Independent School District. Named after Mary B. Dawson, the principal of the first public school in South Austin, the school today prides itself on being an inclusive environment committed to high achievement. Young Dawson Dolphins range from prekindergarten through fifth grade and can follow either a one-way or two-way dual-language track. Faculty and administration emphasize compassion, environmental awareness and critical thinking, and teach both real-world and classroom skills at a pace and style tailored to each individual student. Quality instruction, a comprehensive curriculum, high expectations for student achievement, development of leadership and citizenship skills, and attention to the whole child are all part of the school’s mission statement. The school offers special education and after-school programs, as well as a variety of creative learning courses, including music, visual arts and drama.

Dawson renewed my faith in public education. Dawson provides an amazing education with caring teachers. I wouldn't consider going anywhere else. If I have to consider going elsewhere due to AISD school closures I will move out of AISD.
