Barnard Comprehensive Math and Science Center, also known as Barnard Elementary School, is a Chicago Public Schools campus serving prekindergarten through eighth grade students. The school enrolls more than 270 students. Opened in the 1880s, Barnard is named after education pioneer Alice K. Barnard, who served as the first female principal in the Chicago Public School system at the turn of the 20th century. After nearly 40 years of leadership there, the school was named in her honor after her death in 1924. Barnard provides a foundation that teaches students flexibility, curiosity and perseverance. The school boasts a demanding curriculum in math, languages, and science. Barnard Comprehensive Math and Science Elementary is a member of the International Baccalaureate Program (IB), which helps prepare students for success in high school and college. Barnard places an emphasis on community partnerships to improve student success. Parents are encouraged to get involved with the Parent as Mentor Program, as well as other classroom and extracurricular volunteer opportunities. An engaged online Parent Portal firmly connects parents to the educational community. Students can participate in a number of activities, including math club, science club and chess club. The school also hosts yearly events like the Back to School Bash.

While there were teachers who put great effort in, the ability to control the children was poor. It was a toxic environment and needed better disciplinary strategies.

A change has come this past year! I think Barnard is a great school in much transition (in a positive direction). They have a very hands-on principle and assistant principle who work with students and parents to help children reach their potential goals. As with any schools in transition, I believe...

We now have so many after school programs to choose from. One of my grandchildren has a new teacher and she is wonderful. The new ad...
