Elizabeth Sutherland Elementary School is a Chicago Public Schools campus serving students in kindergarten through eighth Grade. Once a portable grouping of classrooms located on a corner of the Beverly neighborhood, a new school was built in 1925 and named after local educator Elizabeth “Bessie” Sutherland, a long-time Chicago teacher. Sutherland Elementary now serves more than 700 students in a modern, 21st-century learning environment. The school’s equity initiative places social justice at the center of the school's mission. The school’s anti-bias curriculum seeks to create a safe and responsive environment for students with an emphasis on justice and action. Extracurricular activities seek to strengthen community and teamwork skills among students, preparing young learners to be active and engaged members of their communities. Students can take advantage of a number of athletic programs, including volleyball, basketball, and soccer, as well as extracurricular activities such as art and urban gardening clubs. Parent involvement is encouraged through volunteering in school and community-wide events.

We have seen differentiated learning within the classroom where students are met where they are and helped to improve. This is an excellent neighborhood s...
