The Grand Rapids Child Discovery Center is located one mile north of Madison Area in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It first opened its doors in 2000 with 85 students in kindergarten through second grade. With the Reggio philosophy of learning as the center of its purpose, the school became a fully operational elementary school in 2003, serving 272 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Based on Reggio Emilia's philosophy of learning from the mid-1900s, the Child Discovery Center offers a progressive and collaborative form of education for young children. The curriculum is guided and influenced by the students, allowing it to cater to the direct needs of the community.
Due to this philosophy's belief that environment plays an integral part in learning, outdoor classrooms are used whenever weather permits, and physical activity and movement is heavily encouraged.
The Grand Rapids Child Discovery Center is highly sought after in the Grand Rapids area, so a lottery system is in place to keep enrollment available to as many students as possible in the community.
