South County Middle, formerly South County Secondary School, has been a stand-alone middle school since 2012. Headed by principal Peter Kownacki, SCMS is a Region 4 Virginia public school located between Laurel Hill Golf Club and Newington Heights Park. Known as the South County Mustangs, the staff at the school encourages their students to strive to become capable, connected and contributing members of their greater and school community during their middle school years. Housing grades 7-8, SCMS is a Blue Ribbon School for Music, has a National Junior Honor Society, a Mental Health and Wellness Initiative and over a dozen after school programs and activities. SCMS is built near two historical sites in the Lorton area. The site where the school is constructed used to be a corn field farmed by inmates of the nearby jail. It was also the site of the original Nike missile Control Sites, which was a system designed to defend the nation’s capital during the Cold War. The other nearby site, mentioned earlier, is the former DC Department of Corrections facility at Lorton that housed inmates from Washington, D.C. for over a century. It has now been converted into a museum and arts center. South County Middle School has increased the safety and security of its students and maintained academic excellence.

South County Middle School is a great experience. The teachers were supportive and fun, the extracurriculars were engaging, and it is full of intelligent people. The administration messed up sometimes and while the school lunch was okay compared to others I have distinct memories of bad milk not being uncommon. I hope that they make it easier for students to talk to the teachers in the future.

My boys love this school, teachers and friends they have made. There are lots of clubs and after school activities to choose from. The school is newer and has an amazing sports complex.

Academics is good; they have a great effective after school program. Bullying policies aren't pushed as much as they should be.
