St. Bernard Elementary School is a private Catholic school in the Glassell Park neighborhood. It serves kindergarten through 8th grade students. With a student population of just over 200, there is a strong teacher to student ratio of 19 to 1. The school has received strong reviews in terms of preparing students to move on to their high school years. St. Bernard Elementary specializes in a dual language immersion program, allowing students the ability to work toward becoming bilingual. Athletics options for both boys and girls are available. St. Bernard’s offers flag football, basketball, volleyball, and soccer. All sports are part of what is known as CYO, which stands for Catholic Youth Organization, which allows the teams to play against other CYO schools in the area. St. Bernard’s also offers after school enrichment programs in music, speech, leadership and cooking. The school dates back to 1941, when it was established with 135 students. It has grown since then, and added resources such as a specialized computer lab in 1993. St. Bernard Elementary ranks in the top 20% of all California private schools in terms of affordability.

St. Bernard staff and teachers truly care about all of the students. They work very hard and put in extra hours to help the children with tutoring and have great communication with all parents. It is a private school and you are required to volunteer. But you make great lifelong friends with familie...

Understaffed and underqualified teachers which can be detrimental to your child's future and education. Emails are being constantly sent to parents to donate towards the school to help "beautify" the school grounds. That should be the responsibility of the school or archdiocese and not the parents....

My family has been going to this school for many generations. I now have my daughter at SBS and I can say that the school has never been better and stronger with their curriculum.
