John Early Middle School engages student learning using museum objects, inquiry and projects. The school’s overall goal is to build on what students bring to the classroom and offer them ways to use their passions and strengths as opportunities to be successful. A museum created in their school building enables students to work as curators, designers and docents while they learn more about the history of Nashville. Students can analyze artifacts, design exhibits and develop their storytelling skills. Trips to area museums enhance their hands-on learning experiences, where they can meet and talk with museum professionals. Though results of state test scores have been lower at this school compared to all Tennessee schools, improvement scores have remained steady. John Early’s curriculum and methods are based on the Paideia philosophy of education, which focuses on critical thinking, collaborative dialogue and open-ended questioning. The school’s community partners help it further support the student body with enrichment, internships and mentor opportunities.

The student's that actually want to learn are constantly distracted by the disrespect, fighting, and bul...

I, too, transferred my child here to go to Hume-Fogg. Quite frankly, these kids are better behaved and the teachers are more interested in the kids instead of their iPhones. They need a band program, though. I mean...they have one BUT it's brand new and it's choking out due to a severe lack of paren...
