East Side Community School is a college preparatory academy that enrolls around 700 students and shares a campus with Girls Prep LES. The school has a lower than average student-to-teacher ratio of 13-to-1, in addition to a high graduation rate and an equally high percentage of graduates who enroll in college or career programs. Advanced Placement courses offered at East Side include biology, calculus, computer science and English literature. Students in every grade level compile core subject portfolios marking their academic progress, with portfolios examined and vetted twice a year and graduation dependent upon the successful completion of the portfolio process. Studio arts classes are required for all students, as are benchmark assignments such as collaborative group projects and presentations, in-depth research papers and student-designed science experiments. The school organizes various field trips throughout the school year, and offers several extracurricular activities that include athletic programs for basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball for girls, and baseball, basketball and soccer for boys. East Side Community School participates in a nonprofit program called “Facing History and Ourselves,” with curriculum centered on ethical dilemmas throughout history and in students’ everyday lives. With a larger student body and an incredibly active school environment, East Side Community School is a great college preparatory option for middle and high school students in the East Village.

East Side helped me learn the importance of going the extra mile. When I entered ninth grade, i was so scared to learn, to be honest about who i was, or the changes i wanted to make. the teachers at east side showed me that being who i was, in all aspects of my life should be my top priority. when I left 12th grade, I was a trans women of color who new her worth in society, no longer a scared closeted kid who didn't know their own voice.

I love East Side. The teachers are compassionate and care for their students academically and personally. You can tell they love what they do, which transfers to their teaching and their student's learning. The community is based on mutual respect and meaningful relationships with one another. I have nothing bad to say about this school from an academic and structural standpoint.

I have two kids at East Side, one is white, the other, Latinx. Both my kids love, love, love the school, its culture of zero tolerance for bullying and the teachers' dedication. It's obvious that teachers at this school love their job and are strict about academics and empathetic towards their stude...

In response to a previous reviewer's horror about East Side's commitment to expose racism; it's all part of the white experience to recognize and accept this horrible reality, and in fact is very telling when a white person is offended by the promotion of 'woke'.I am a white parent and never felt vi...

The School is more interested in "WOKE" politics then possibly making our children feel dirty and horrible for simply being born white... What's next, Religion? Casting Whites as villain is vile and should be stopped.

School is more concerned with identity politics and wokeness than education. The principal Mark Federman being the worst offender. If you want your child exposed to true racism, send them here.
