The Girls Preparatory School of the Lower East Side, often referred to as “Girls Prep LES,” became the first all-girls, public charter school in New York City when it opened in 2005. Developed by the Public Preparatory Network and the Charter Schools Institute of the State University of New York, the school serves students in prekindergarten to eighth grade. The expressed goal of Girls Prep LES is to put its students on a path to college and career readiness, with an emphasis on advanced science, technology, engineering and mathematics coursework at the middle school level. The school consistently achieves high test scores on the New York State science exam, and each year students celebrate “Ultimate Pi Day” with a 5-kilometer fundraising run. The elementary and middle schools occupy the same facility, and the impressive, five-story building includes an art room, auditorium, cafeteria, library and gymnasium. Sports offered at Girls Prep LES include basketball, volleyball and fencing, with clubs centered on science, mathematics and student government. The school’s location at the eastern end of Houston Street means easy access to the city’s public amenities at East River Park and the Hamilton Fish Recreation Center.

It was ok they prepared us well for high school. The girls were a bit of a mess and some if the school rules were unnecessary.

My daughter loves this school and that's what counts. She makes sure she does her best in her homework and make it to school on time. A big, big difference from her previous school!

We came to Girls Prep from another charter school in the 4th grade. Now she attends the Middle School and is thriving better than I have ever seen her. My experience with Girls Prep has been a positive one. Everyone is willing to help in the success of the scholars. I am really happy with our choice...

Stressed. This school seems like it might be a good fit for my daughter. She is rather excited about the upcoming school year. However the lack of support for 5th grade afterschool services is a downfall for me. This school only covers grades 6 - 8 leaving parents of newly entering 5th graders at th...
