High School 560, known as City-As-School, is a public high school located at 16 Clarkson Street between Hudson Street and Seventh Avenue South in the West Village of New York City. One of America's oldest alternative public high schools, it was founded by Frederick J. Koury and Rick Safran in 1972. City-As-School students are 11th and 12th grade transfer students that come from any of the public, private or parochial schools within the five boroughs of New York City. It has 487 students in grades 10-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 12 to 1. City-As-School program is continuously evolving, putting students first, specifically students at risk of dropping out, and revitalizing their interest in their own lives. It strives to have students become excited about their education and the society around them. At City-As-School High School 560, the school year is divided into four eight-week cycles. Students spend between 16 and 32 hours per week at one or more of the community internships which they choose from a catalog. Also, they enroll in two to four classes and two seminars held at the school during each cycle. Advanced students may enroll in college courses or other structured independent study programs. City-As-School offers a range of classes within traditional academic subject areas. As part of their educational program, students must also complete a graduation portfolio comprised of a research paper, personal essay, career plan and a complete college application. Students are awarded a Regents high school diploma. Currently, the school has over 500 internship opportunities. In order to apply to City- As-School, a student must be at least 16 years old and have a minimum of 16 high school credits or completed about 2 years of high school elsewhere. Some students are eligible to take classes at local colleges tuition-free.

City as was a great school to come from, it had a lot to offer me in regard to social connections and adventure through internships the experience was overall great and everyone enjoyed it from what I experienced.

I really enjoyed this school because it gave me the ability to graduate in a laid-back environment with teachers who cared. I had a really awful experience with college applications/prep and felt really alone with it. Because of covid I know they are understaffed, so no hate to the counselors, but considering every cycle people are graduating, the school needs to prioritize having a bigger college counselor team.

Absolute 5 stars. I don't know why I didn't hear about this school earlier. I went to a traditional high school in New York City and it was just too boring for my brain. I didn't struggle with the work, in fact when I did go to school, I would be one of the top in class. I ended up dropping out and thats when I found City-As-Schools. They have a completely different way for students to learn- experiential learning, meaning you learn by doing internships in the real world that can set you up for your career. I was lucky enough to obtain an internship at a very big record label which eventually turned into an ongoing job. I recommend this school to all students who feel like the traditional education system is too systematic for them or just plain boring. You will succeed in this school with the right effort.
