South Pasadena Middle School encourages its sixth through eighth-grade students to be a positive and supportive community in which individuals can become capable, contributing and lifelong learners. The diverse student body learns to be respectful, responsible and honest community members who demonstrate integrity and fairness to others. Originally known as South Pasadena Junior High School when it opened in 1928, SPMS has an expanded and modernized campus with Spanish-style buildings, a campanile clock tower, sports fields and tennis courts. SPMS won a Gold Ribbon Award for integrating technology into its core academic and elective classes. Various strategies, such as using Chromebooks for English assignment research and Gizmos to conduct virtual science experiments, fulfill the curriculum goals of teaching students to think critically about relevant issues and collaborate in a meaningful way as they find creative solutions to real-world problems. At SPMS, 78% of students score at or above the proficiency level for math and 84% at or above that level for reading, which is almost double the metric for students across the state.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

Generally safe, more so now that there's a metal fence around the school (which might be overkill). Sometimes over break the lockers get vandalized.

My experience with South Pasadena Middle School was good during the elementary school years, but unfortunately not in the later years. We felt many days disconnected, alienated & n...
