North Springfield Elementary first opened in 1956 — the heart of the baby boom. In response to the explosion of school enrollment, Fairfax County rented five residential homes to serve as makeshift learning spaces for North Springfield until construction on the school building, located just a couple blocks away, was complete. Each day, about 350 students would join their 12 teachers for lessons taught in bedrooms, dining rooms, or around a living room fireplace. Just in time for the start of the new school year, in September 1957, North Springfield welcomed 423 students into its new (and current) location. First renovated in 1968, the two-story brick building underwent a full renewal and expansion in 2017, including the addition of a 12,300-square-foot music, art, and library wing, as well as an outdoor classroom amphitheater. With annual enrollment averaging 500 students, the public school offers preschool and K-5 programs, with a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. According to state test scores, 86 percent of students are at least proficient in math and 77 percent in reading. Committed to fostering a caring and responsible community of learners by supporting all students socially, intellectually, and emotionally, the faculty and administration prioritize student achievement in language arts and mathematics, while emphasizing the development of moral values and social skills. The balanced, somewhat traditional approach to scholarship is interwoven with technology as a vital learning tool at all instruction levels. Students — known as Beavers, in honor of their sunglass-sporting cartoon mascot — enjoy a variety of extracurricular opportunities, from the fifth grade Theater Club and Hand Bell Choir, to the STEM Lab and Maker Space program. Schoolwide traditions like the speed-stacking competition, end-of-year dance parties, and Innovation Day are a point of pride throughout the surrounding suburban neighborhood; in fact, the annual Top 10 running event has attracted cheering fans for the past 30 years. With a low staff turnover and teachers praised as warm and welcoming, Beaver pride is bolstered by a long-cherished tradition of whole-family involvement. Having come a long way since its inception in rented neighborhood homes, North Springfield continues to maintain a special place in the hearts of the North Springfield community.

The teachers are completely committed to the students. I love that my children are not only growing academically but also socially and emotionally. Civics and innovation are emphasized across the curriculum.

Our son went to NS elementary from kindergarten to 5th grade to NS elementary. He had a great experience and loved all his teachers. I think the 5 star rating does not reflect how good the teachers or the overall quality of the school and students. Any student with special needs are given the extra...

We are so grateful to be at this school. Having the opportunity to leave, we chose to stay and I've never looked back.
