Barbara C. Jordan Elementary is a certified LEED facility offering more than 300 kindergarten through fifth-grade students in the northwestern area of University City a well-rounded education. The school originally opened in 1952 as Daniel Boone Elementary, giving a nod to the history of the area. In 1996, it was renamed after the distinguished U.S. Texas representative.
Barbara C. Jordan Elementary is adjacent to the 12-acre Fogerty Park that is equipped with technical infrastructure. The library media center with science and arts programs stands out from the school’s curriculum. Integrated units in science, technology and engineering focus on core concepts combined with hands-on learning in science labs which are supported by in-school docents.
In mathematics, students focus on concepts to gain a conceptual understanding which leads to efficient problem-solving and critical thinking. In addition to general studies, students have access to a wide range of services including a talented and gifted development program, English language learning programs, well-being specialists and social workers.
All students participate in the music program, with fourth and fifth graders given the opportunity to play a stringed instrument.
