Arcola's empty fields replaced by hundreds of homes
When Solace Brewing Co. opened in Arcola in 2017, co-founder Jon Humerick could see an empty field across the street. The view has since been replaced by hundreds of houses that have sprung up in the Northern Virginia community, says Humerick, Solace’s director of operations. “We picked that area of Loudoun County because we knew there were plans for an explosion in residential construction as well as retail.” Indeed, this community 35 miles outside of Washington, D.C., is growing fast. Since 2010, hundreds of houses, three breweries and a shopping center have been built in this neighborhood of 1,300 people, with more residential and commercial development ongoing. On top of what’s happening in Arcola, a big draw is its proximity to restaurants, stores and commuter routes in surrounding neighborhoods, says Kelly Ettrich, a Realtor at Century 21 Redwood Realty who lives in neighboring Brambleton. “It’s this little pocket of homes that’s close to so many great things.”

Data centers, craft beers and yak dumplings
The economy of once-rural Arcola has evolved from farmland to server farms. Data centers operated by Google and other technology companies support 12,000 jobs across Loudoun County, and they pay big tax bills that keep residents’ property taxes from skyrocketing. However, some residents complain about the centers’ unattractive appearance and road congestion caused by their construction. Data centers are just one example of the fast growth in Arcola’s business sector. Since 2015, three breweries have opened, including Solace Brewing Co. Patrons sip IPAs in Solace’s tasting room or at outside picnic tables. Food trucks make appearances throughout the week, and Humerick adds the brewery is building a kitchen that’ll open in 2024. The food scene is mostly quick-service spots, but neighboring Brambleton is home to more acclaimed restaurants such as Himalayan Wild Yak. True to its name, the Nepalese eatery serves yak ribs and yak-filled dumplings. Dulles Landing, a shopping center that opened in 2015, houses a Walmart and other big-box stores. More commercial real estate is on the way; developer St. Johns Properties Inc. broke ground on 100,000 square feet of office space off Dulles West Boulevard in 2023. The complex could accommodate tech companies, manufacturers or even retailers.

Skating and splashing at Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park
There aren’t many public parks in Arcola, though some residential communities have their own playgrounds and swimming pools. About 2 miles outside the neighborhood, Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park provides 250 acres of recreation. It features 17 athletic fields, a skate park and a splash pad that’s open from May to September. Dogs are welcome as long as they’re on leashes. Houses of worship have been in the area since the 1740s. Arcola Church, part of the United Methodist Church, has been an active congregation since the 1850s. Since then, Arcola has welcomed additional churches and Shirdi Sai Mandir Hindu temple. Plus, Madani Masjid is just outside of Arcola in South Riding. For health care services, residents are within 3 miles of StoneSprings Hospital Center.

Brewery hosts dueling pianos and trivia
Solace Brewing Co. draws crowds most weeks with reoccurring events including Thursday night trivia and live music. The brewery’s most popular events are the dueling piano showdowns it hosts a few times annually. The event was so well-received that other spots in the area have introduced their own dueling piano events, Humerick says. “I wish I could say it’s still unique, but I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”
