A small city north of Detroit
Bloomfield Hills offers rolling hills, flourishing woods and exquisite grand estates 20 miles from the culture and excitement of downtown Detroit. With access to some of the finest dining, shopping and exclusive golf courses in Metro Detroit, this small Oakland County city is in high demand. It’s also home to the world-renowned Cranbrook Educational Community, which includes the Wallace Ice Arena, the Cranbrook Art Museum and the Cranbrook Institute of Science. Once farmland, the area retains copious trees and open spaces. There are even more green areas around, with three private golf and equestrian clubs in the neighborhood.

Luxury homes with waterfront views
“The cost of living is still affordable in this luxury-rich area. Estate houses are being built, and entry-level houses are around $350,000 or $250,000 for a condo,” says Gwen Schultz , a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty-Birmingham with over 15 years of experience. The Bloomfield Hills neighborhood is filled with condos, colonials, Craftsmen, contemporary farmhouses and Prairie style-inspired homes. There are also masterfully crafted waterfront estates and large luxury lakefront dwellings nearby in the lakes area of Oakland County. The area is dotted with small lakes and streams, and some homes have almost exclusive access to the picturesque views. The lots here are oversized and wooded, which contrasts nicely with the estates' stone materials, private docks, and grand patios. The desirable community has walking trails, and mature trees adorn the streets. Prices range from $225,000 for a three-bedroom condo to $5.5 million for a six-bedroom historic Mediterranean-style villa.

A variety of outdoor activities
There are no dedicated parks in Bloomfield Hills, but the area is close to all manner of recreation. Springdale Park is part of the Springdale Golf Course in neighboring Birmingham. It has a pavilion, playground and picnic areas. The Cranbrook House and Gardens is part of the 319-acre Cranbrook campus. The house was built in 1908 and is metro Detroit's oldest surviving manor. Its gardens span over 40 acres and feature incredible views and historic fountains. House tours are available from June through October, and the gardens are open most of the year. “Bloomfield is a nice area. It’s close to Detroit, but not too close. It’s probably a 40-minute drive. People enjoy the outdoors here, and there are seven golf courses in a 10-mile radius. There’s also Shain Park in nearby Birmingham. It hosts annual events like art fairs and a carnival,” say Mrs. Schultz.

A road runs through it
There may be limited sidewalks in Bloomfield Hills, but that doesn’t mean residents don’t enjoy walking. The lushly green area has narrow, tree-lined streets practically made for strolling or biking. Public transportation is an option, with limited bus stops along Woodward Avenue, a major roadway that bisects the area. The community is close to West Square Lake Road, Telegraph Road and Interstate 75, and Kensington Road also cuts through the neighborhood.

Groundbreaking architecture and community theatre
The neighborhood has several unique attributes. Frank Lloyd Wright’s groundbreaking style is on display in the Affleck House. The lines of this iconic home mimic the Midwestern plains, and it's one of Michigan’s most significant structures. Built in 1941, the house spans a 40-foot ravine but is anchored into the surrounding hillside. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, and tours are available by appointment. St. Dunstan’s Theatre is part of a complex with indoor and outdoor performance spaces. The Cranbrook Greek Theatre was built in 1916 and is one of only a handful of outdoor Greek-style artist spaces left in the country. The indoor theatre is called the Pavilion. It also began as an open-air structure before being transformed into a permanent building in 1932.
