About Brookhaven, GA

About Brookhaven, GA

Young, fast-growing city in north Atlanta

In 2012, Brookhaven became DeKalb County's 11th city, and it has been growing ever since. “Brookhaven acquired a chunk of land in unincorporated Atlanta, so it now spans both sides of the highway, and they’re looking to expand even more. They’re trying to double their size every couple years,” says Juli St George, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty who has lived in the Brookhaven area for 10 years. Her neighborhood was ultimately annexed into the city. “When we moved here, we weren’t part of Brookhaven, and we wanted to be acquired because we got better amenities once we were annexed.” The city’s nearly 57,000 residents have access to hundreds of acres of public parks, large shopping districts and a 10-mile commute to downtown Atlanta. Brookhaven is within 5 miles of some of the city’s largest employers, including Emory University, the Centers for Disease Control and healthcare systems like Piedmont Healthcare and Northside Hospital.

Worldwide cuisine along Buford Highway

The city has three distinctive retail and dining districts. Buford Highway Cultural Corridor has one of the country's largest populations of immigrant-owned businesses, with restaurants from dozens of countries. “There are tons of amazing restaurants to discover,” says Rahwa Tassaw, a real estate agent with Taylor Morrison Realty of Georgia who has 12 years of experience. “I know people who play restaurant roulette. They just pick a random restaurant to eat at.” Town Brookhaven in Peachtree Corriddor is the city’s largest mall, and the outdoor shopping center is filled with pubs, salons and big-box grocery stores. Brookhaven Village has boutique shopping and some of the city's most visited restaurants and cocktail bars. The area's Haven Restaurant and Bar and Arnette’s Chop Shop were both highlighted in Atlanta Eats — Haven for its Sunday brunch and Arnette’s for its tomahawk short rib and Baked Alaska.

The century-old Silver Lake

Historic Brookhaven, the city’s most established neighborhood, was originally a golf district, and the city is still known for its golf clubs and private recreation. Historic Brookhaven surrounds the Capital City Country Club, an 18-hole course around an artificial lake. Birdwatchers flock to Silver Lake, a private 38-acre lake that was built in 1911 as the first bird sanctuary in the Atlanta area. As the city has grown, so has its selection of public parks. Blackburn Park, in the Lakes District , is a go-to spot for tennis enthusiasts because of its 18 courts. It neighbors Murphey Candler Park, a 135-acre city park with playgrounds, a pool and a lake stocked with largemouth bass.

Star-studded Cherry Blossom Festival

Brookhaven’s signature events celebrate food, music and the city’s diverse population. Over 40,000 people flood into Brookhaven every spring for the Cherry Blossom Festival Summer Block Party, which has featured headliners like Joan Jett, Smash Mouth and The Fray. Sip Brookhaven and Taste Brookhaven are twin festivals in spring and fall celebrating all things wine, cocktails and fine dining. The Brookhaven International Festival in October highlights the diversity of the Buford Highway Cultural Corridor with live performances, art displays and an array of international cuisine.

Brookhaven is expanding in size and price point

As Brookhaven expands, so does its housing selection. “You have traditional '50s brick ranches and the new mansions, a really eclectic mix of homes on the same street,” St George says. The median sale price for a home is around $895,000. The median price for the rest of DeKalb County is $350,000, making Brookhaven one of the most expensive cities in the area. On average, Tassaw says, Brookhaven homes are on the market for 25 to 40 days.
