A community with a sweet history

With street names like Grape, Peach and Orange, Fruit Belt’s history comes together everywhere. Once home to fruit farming, the historically black community is now entirely residential. A part of the borough's most recent history tells the story of community activism in the face of gentrification. Locals of this borough live just east of Lake Erie within walking distance of downtown entertainment.

Some homes require a touch up

Properties in Fruit Belt reflect a mix of historic worker-style cottages and newer duplex townhouses. Tall trees spring from small lawns here and sidewalks connect neighbors. A five-bedroom property that requires renovation may go for $65,000 here, a three-bedroom house with a spacious back yard for $90,000 and a renovated four-bedroom home for $200,000. According to Buffalo native and Realtor Ahmad Nieves of Red Door Real Estate, community members are seeking ways to invest in these properties for the benefit of their neighbors. “I have been helping one woman buy land and property in the area and she is starting to do development.”
