Where neighbors know each other
Woodlake, about 20 miles south of downtown Richmond, Virginia, has a sense of community. Wooded walking trails connect the neighborhood, kayaks float on Swift Creek Reservoir, kids hang out at the pool in the summer and nameplates adorn mailboxes. “As with many neighborhoods, Woodlake goes through cycles,” says Barry Roach, director of communication and outreach for the Woodlake Community Association. “About 10 years ago, this was a Boomer neighborhood. Another generation has moved in, and there are tons of kids. If I had to guess, it’s about two-thirds Millennials and one-third Boomers.” With easy access to U.S. Interstate 288, locals can easily travel to Short Pump or Chesterfield County, but numerous community events throughout the year keep residents busy close to home. “You don’t get bored in Woodlake unless you choose to,” Roach says.
Swift Creek Reservoir and other neighborhood amenities
A 13-mile wooded trail system meanders through Woodlake. On warm summer days, teenagers walk from Swift Creek Reservoir or the pool to the nearby Lucky’s gas station, where they cool down with sodas and snacks. Pocket playgrounds sit in the center of cul-de-sacs. Kids ride their bikes to friends' houses, and with the nearby Chesterfield Police Station, parents feel safe letting them go. There are two separate clubhouses here, each with its own outdoor pool and amenities. The Woodlake Swim & Racquet Club has clay tennis and pickleball courts, while the Aquatic & Fitness Center has a gym, two outdoor pools and an indoor pool. “We have a swim team – the Woodlake Hurricanes – that’s very popular,” Roach says. “We also partner with local competitive swim teams and local high schools who use the pools.” But one of the biggest draws to Woodlake is Swift Creek Reservoir, which residents can access at East West Legacy Park. “It’s a big deal,” Roach explains. “It’s a landmark feature of Woodlake.” Here, locals kayak, pontoon or paddleboat; listen to live music at the amphitheater; or cast their lines into the water and fish.
Chesterfield County Public Schools
Students are zoned for Chesterfield County Public Schools. There are two elementary schools in the neighborhood – Clover Hill Elementary School, which earns a B from Niche, and Woolridge Elementary School, which gets an A-minus. “Some kids walk or ride their bikes to school,” Roach says. Next, students can attend Tomahawk Creek Middle School, which gets a B from Niche, before Cosby High School, which earns an A and has the Health Science Specialty Center, preparing students for careers in healthcare.
Homes on Swift Creek Reservoir, condo options and more
Amongst Woodlake’s oak trees and curving streets sit Colonial Revival and New Traditional properties, most of which were built in the 1990s. Potential homebuyers can find a house on a cul-de-sac for between $400,000 and $550,000, while homes closer to Swift Creek Reservoir typically cost between $800,000 and $1.2 million. “There’s all kinds of housing options in Woodlake,” Roach explains. “Single-family, some large waterfront homes for over a million, apartment complexes, smaller houses for folks that have chosen to downsize, small flats – all kinds of living accommodations.”
What’s happening in Woodlake
“There’s always something going on in Woodlake,” Roach says. “Events really kick in around late April and early May when kids get out of school. We do weekend concerts and DJ parties. Every Tuesday all summer long, we do a makers market – which other people call a farmers market or a crafts fair.” The neighborhood’s biggest celebrations occur on Labor Day, Memorial Day and Fourth of July. The pools are packed, neighbors chat on Adirondack chairs and the evenings end with fireworks.
Woodlake’s shopping centers and Hull Street Road
Woodlake has two shopping centers accessible via the neighborhood’s trail system – the Woodlake Commons Shopping Center and the Village Square-Woodlake Center. Residents can dine at diverse restaurants like Fest Biergarten, Mr. Pepe Mexican Restaurant, Gino’s Pizza and Zheng Garden. For dessert, they go to The Treat Shop, peer into the clear case and choose from donuts, cinnamon rolls and more. The neighborhood is also right off Hull Street Road – a major thoroughfare in the Richmond area – where locals can easily access numerous commercial amenities. Publix, Kroger, Food Lion and The Fresh Market provide grocery shopping options, while various drive-through, fast casual and sit-down restaurants provide options when eating out. Locals grab everyday essentials from nearby Target, Walmart Supercenter or The Home Depot. And for some indoor fun, there’s Uptown Alley, a bowling alley that’s great for all ages, and a Regal Commonwealth movie theater.
U.S. Interstate 288 and Hull Street Road
Woodlake is about 20 miles from downtown Richmond, and locals can get there using Virginia state Route 76. Hull Street Road is just outside the neighborhood and leads towards U.S. Interstate 288, which heads north towards Short Pump and farther south into Chesterfield County. In case of emergency, the Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center is about 5 miles north. And when it’s time to fly, the Chesterfield County Airport is about 13 miles southeast, while the Richmond International Airport is about 30 miles northeast.
