A lowkey village in Fairfax County

Framed by major thoroughfares and some office buildings, Jefferson is a small village in Falls Church with comfortable Cape Cod homes, pocket parks and an active neighborhood association. Located just west of Falls Church City, Jefferson is in Fairfax County. “The homes are cheaper, but it’s not as walkable as Falls Church, though you are close to the interstate,” says Blake Davenport, a Realtor with The Davenport Group at RLAH @properties, who has served the area for six years. He adds that homebuyers can find some of the cheapest homes for their location in the county, as the neighborhood is only 10 miles from Washington, D.C. Along with comparably affordable properties, Jefferson offers a slower-paced community amongst the bustle of northern Virginia. Parents walk their kids over to playgrounds, a couple of long-standing restaurants serve the area, and the neighborhood association hosts seasonal festivities, like a spring festival and holiday light decorating contests.

Cape Cods and bungalows with small, shaded yards

While some residents rent apartments, most live in condos or single-family homes on quiet residential streets. Condos from the 1980s that sit near a community lake cost between $300,000 and $450,000, while colonial-inspired townhouses are priced between $500,000 and $730,000. Cape Cods and bungalows from the mid-to-late 20th century line the shaded residential streets, though there are also occasional mid-century modern and New Traditional designs among them. Prices for single-family homes start at around $700,000 and increase to around $1 million. Due to their lower prices and convenient location, properties tend to sell quickly. “The market has continued to get even more competitive due to the lack of supply. People who found a single-family starter home with a low interest rate aren’t putting them on the market,” Davenport says.

Playgrounds, ball fields and a public golf course

Parks with small playgrounds positioned under tree canopies are scattered throughout the neighborhood, so families can easily walk their kids to Azalea Park or Tyler Park. Small, wooded areas, like John Mastenbrook-Greenway Downs Park, contribute a natural feel to the suburb — the park also has a small playground and brief nature trail where residents can walk their dogs. Larry Graves Park has baseball diamonds and a soccer field for youth sports games, and residents can go to Jefferson District Park for more outdoor recreational activities. The park, which is just north of the neighborhood, has tennis and basketball courts. Golfers spend sunny afternoons on the park’s public 9-hole golf course or train with their kids on the park’s mini golf course.

Regional coffee chains and established local restaurants

A new location, complete with a drive-thru, of beloved D.C. coffee chain Compass Coffee opened in the neighborhood in April 2024, so residents can roll through to grab vanilla lattes and breakfast sandwiches on their way to work. The Original Pancake House has heartier breakfast options, including platters of waffles, pancakes and home fries. For a creative fusion of Mexican and Greek flavors, locals head to Wild Tacoz, a locally owned restaurant serving dishes like gyro burritos, chips and salsa or tzatziki with pita chips. Loving Hut Healthy Cuisine served vegan pho and other Asian plant-based dishes. In the evening, residents can enjoy a beer and listen to live music under colorful lights at JV’s Restaurant, a retro dive bar that’s been serving the community since 1947. Locals pick up groceries at Safeway or Super A Market, an international grocery store. The neighborhood is only about 2 miles west of Seven Corners, which has a shopping center with retailers like Target, Burlington and Ross. However, residents will often take advantage of their proximity to one of the most popular shopping destinations in the state; Tyson’s Corner Center has hundreds of stores like Nordstrom, Zara, Aritzia and Lululemon.

Trick-or-treaters and pups crowd the streets on Halloween

The Jefferson Village Civic Association, which households can join by paying $25 for a year membership, throws seasonal community gatherings. In April, the neighborhood gathers for the annual spring festival at Mastenbrook Park. Local food trucks serve lunch, kids jump on the bounce house or enjoy a magic show, and residents share their favorite blooms at the plant exchange table or make a seasonal craft at the craft table. The community gets to know the first responders that serve the area at National Night Out, an event that’s complete with free ice cream and games. Neighbors celebrate Halloween with a festival with costumed trick-or-treaters and a pup parade, and there are even pumpkins to decorate and pup cups for the dogs. The year closes out with a holiday decorating contest — households compete for awards like “most luminous,” “most inflatables” and “best overall.”

Automotive technology certifications at Falls Church High

Children can begin at Graham Road Elementary, which has a C plus rating from Niche. Students progress to Jackson Middle and Falls Church High, which have B-plus and B ratings, respectively. The high school offers career preparation courses, including an automotive technology program where students can earn certifications and college credit.

Commuters merge onto the Capital Beltway or Arlington Boulevard

Jefferson is framed by major thoroughfares, so commuters can easily navigate to work or drive to Metro stations. To the south, Arlington Boulevard routes residents 10 miles east to downtown Washington, D.C., and the Capital Beltway is to the west, which locals use to travel throughout the DMV area. U.S. routes like Lee Highway to the north and state routes like the Leesburg Pike to the east link with major interstates. There are bus stops serviced by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority along most roadways. Commuters can drive 2 miles northeast to the East Falls Church Metro station, where they can pay to leave their car in the park and ride lot before catching the Orange or Silver Line. For longer trips, the Ronald Reagan National Airport is 9 miles east.
