A friendly east Fort Wayne community

Concordia Gardens, which shares the name of a seminary within the neighborhood, is a cluster of late 1950s and early 1960s homes on the northeast side of Fort Wayne, adjacent to Interstate 69. Rahim Pirani, the neighborhood association's vice president and a 40-year resident, says proximity to schools was his initial draw, but connections over the years kept him there. "The neighbors are friendly and know each other, it's quiet, and there is a good mix of new families and people like us who have been here for a very long time,” he says. A neighborhood resident with a background in horticulture publishes now-monthly newsletters, originating in 2018, with gardening and lawncare tips posted to the community's website. The community is bordered by Clinton Street and the St Joseph River, so residents have easy access to work and play. Downtown Fort Wayne is a six-mile commute south while hiking trails and golf are practically in folks’ backyards.

Lower buy-in for semi-updated ranch style homes

Concordia Gardens' streets are shaded by trees in most every yard. Mid-century ranch and split-levels are the most common home styles, built on lots of about a tenth of an acre. Many of these homes feature updated exteriors, whether it’s a fresh coat of paint, contemporary siding or a new roof. A typical home is a three-bedroom, 1,500-square-foot home with a private driveway, selling for between $170,000 and $270,000 on average. There’s also a small retirement community located along Clinton Street.

Putters, frisbees and hiking shoes

Beckett’s Run Trail covers nearly 2 miles, running from Martin Luther Drive on the neighborhood’s southern edge to Meadows Parkway in the north. The trail follows the edge of the Concordia Theological Seminary campus, then along the St. Joseph River and finally cuts through the forested land of Beckett’s Run. “The trail is great for getting outdoors,” says Pirani. “It’s an easy walk, and the scenery is beautiful.” For those who prefer a workout with their outdoor time, the nearby Shoaff Park Boathouse is home to the G2 Rowing Association, which offers rowing programs for all ages and abilities. Shoaff Park is also home to a playground, a disc golf course, a picnic pavilion, and a full-service 18-hole course that is open to the public. Though visible from the eastern side of the neighborhood, Shoaff Park is on the other side of the river, requiring a more than 3-mile drive via the nearest bridge over the river.

Shopping at Costco or enjoying a margarita

When it’s time to stock up on groceries, residents head 2 miles west to the Costco Wholesale. The Coldwater Crossing Shopping Center has a Walmart Supercenter, as well as a Regal Cinema showing feature films. Big box retailers such as Macy’s, Barnes & Noble and JCPenney are a mile and a half south of the highway interchange. A night out for dinner means trying one of the many restaurants in the shopping center. Agaves Mexican Grill serves tacos, fajitas and other Mexican favorites, alongside jumbo margaritas. For dinner from another part of the world, Haru Sushi Izakaya is local sushi restaurant.
