School-centered, suburban community minutes from Downtown Ithaca
In Northeast Ithaca, walkable convenience meshes with a warm, neighborly atmosphere, creating a blend of urban accessibility and community spirit 4 miles outside Downtown Ithaca. Not only is the neighborhood named after its proximity to Downtown, but it also shares the name of the highly rated elementary school tucked within its residential streets. “Northeast Ithaca is a highly desirable area,” says local Realtor Karen Eldredge of Howard Hanna Real Estate. “It’s a walkable, slightly more suburban community just north of Cornell’s campus that centers around the public school district.”
Two centrally located schools within Northeast Ithaca
Northeast School and Dewitt Middle School are located within Northeast Ithaca, serving as one of the community’s main draws. Both schools earn an A-minus overall Niche grade and rank as the No. 1 best public elementary and middle schools in Tompkins County, respectively. Students complete their educational journey at Ithaca High School, maintaining an A Niche score with top marks in academics and teachers. “Ithaca as a whole is desirable for being a vibrant college town, but Northeast Ithaca residents are a mix of people who want to be part of the public school district,” Eldredge says, adding that proximity to Cornell University is a bonus. North of the University's campus and five miles north of Ithaca College, Northeast Ithaca provides young scholars easy access to highly regarded postsecondary education options.

Mid-century homes on modest lots create suburban feel
Homes built in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s line Northeast Ithaca’s grassy, semi-wooded residential streets. Raised ranches and split-level styles are the most common, with Colonial Revival and Cape Cod influences prominent. Resident and Ithaca native Jamie Jensen, a Realtor with Hanna Howard, says many homes sit on half-acre lots, which are bigger – and at times more desirable – than homes in neighboring Belle Sherman or Downtown. “Plus, Northeast Ithaca has wider streets than other neighborhoods, which makes it more walkable,” she says. Prices for real estate here can range from $270,000 to $660,000, though outliers with over 6,000 square feet may fetch up to $875,000.

Convenient shopping centers in walking and biking distance
Convenience to supermarkets and shopping is also an appeal to residents of Northeast Ithaca. “I chose Northeast because it has a true suburb feel, but it’s close to Target and Aldi,” Jensen says. “I can bike or walk to the Triphammer mall or the mall on Pyramid Drive.” Grocery stores, pharmacies, and casual restaurants are clustered at NY State Route 13 and Triphammer Road crossroads. Cayuga Shopping Center has a Big Lots and Aldi, while the Triphammer Marketplace across the street has an Ithaca Bakery location and specialty shops like Gorges Cycles and Bev & Co boutique. At the Shops at Ithaca Shopping Mall on Pyramid Road, locals stop in for a hot coffee at Cup O’ Jo Café or pick up essentials at Target. Just west of Northeast Ithaca, the small Corners Community commercial strip homes dining favorites like The Heights and Alléchant Bistro.

Cornell University’s natural spaces and Northeast neighborhood parks
Cornell University also plays a role in Northeast Ithaca’s recreation since the campus is chock-full of picturesque, natural spaces. “The eastern portion of the neighborhood butts against the Ornithology Lab at Cornell, which is a great asset to that area,” Eldredge says, noting the scenic Wilson Trail that is open to the public and connects directly to Dewitt Middle School. The trail’s labyrinth of narrow wooden bridges and mulchy pathways weave through the dense Sapsucker Woods and its pond. Avid birders take the path to the Sherwood Observation Platform with binoculars in hand to catch a glimpse of the diverse range of local birds. Inside the Lab of Ornithology, visitors can explore educational displays and interactive exhibits about the flight, anatomy and sounds of feathered creatures. The discovery lab also features a theater, library, and auditorium. The center is temporarily closed for renovations, with a re-opening set for summer 2024, but locals may still access the trails and observation deck from dawn to dusk.
As part of the Finger Lakes region of central New York, Northeastern Ithaca residents are 4 miles west of the expansive Cayuga Lake. Locals fish along its graveled banks or take boats out into its deeper waters while hikers watch the sunset across the lake from the Cayuga Waterfront Trail. Closer to home, Salem Park and Tareyton Park are on the neighborhood’s northeast corner, and both provide playgrounds and open spaces for kids.

Year-round school events and the annual Ithaca Festival
Residents flock to Northeastern Elementary and DeWitt Middle for the myriad events hosted year-round by the schools. Eldredge says Northeast Ithaca’s centrally located public schools play a vital role in bringing neighbors together, with events from student showcases like band performances and science fairs to community events. The DeWitt Pride Parade and Juneteenth events occur at the middle school every June, celebrating the school and neighborhood’s diversity.
The city’s most popular event also takes place in early June. Free and open to the public, the Ithaca Festival is a 3-day community celebration. A parade on Thursday night kicks off the event, which has been an Ithaca staple since 1977. “We bring together local artists Downtown, and you get amazing food, jewelry and art and listen to great music,” Jensen says. Live music floods the Commons in Downtown with vibrant tunes from three stages while festivalgoers tuck into street food and drinks from over one hundred vendors lining the street.
Getting around Ithaca and proximity to the airport
Though the neighborhood is quite walkable, residents still rely on cars to get around the city. Northeast Ithaca sits just below NY State Route 13, connecting residents to Downtown Ithaca within 4 miles. Commuters benefit from a network of bus stops strewn across the neighborhood’s residential streets, which link to Downtown and neighboring communities. Less than 3 miles north, the Ithaca Tompkins International Airport is only a 4-minute drive away – still, the neighborhood retains its quiet reputation. “Flights usually take off around 6 a.m.,” Jensen says. “You might hear them a little, but they are small planes. You’ll never hear a giant engine.”
