About Lehi, UT

A growing town in the Silicon Slopes

Lehi, one of Utah’s fastest-growing cities, is in the heart of the “Silicon Slopes” where the burgeoning tech industry is blossoming. Positioned roughly midway between Salt Lake City to the north and Provo to the south this once primarily farmland, has transformed as businesses have set up offices and campuses. “Jobs are the number one reason people come to Lehi, but that’s not why they stay,” says Lewis Barton, a real estate broker for Lakeview Realty and Lehi resident. “They stay for all the amazing outdoor activities, from the skiing to the rock climbing. I’m an avid snow skier and I’m on the slopes every week. I talk to people worldwide who say they came for a job and intended to move after a few years, and that they’ve been here for 10 years now.”

Housing trends in Lehi

Housing options in Lehi reflect its evolution from a rural community into a growing city. The oldest homes are concentrated in the Lehi Main Street Historic District, recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Beyond that, new construction dominates, with ongoing development creating neighborhoods that include walking paths and parks. “You’ve got everything from multimillion-dollar homes to starter homes and apartment complexes,” says Daniel Dixon, Realtor with RE/MAX and longtime resident of the area.

Nearby recreation that feels worlds away

Lehi’s location near the Wasatch Range supports a range of outdoor activities. Mountain biking is popular, and hiking in places like American Fork Canyon immerses residents in alpine settings of towering pine trees and flowing rivers. “We live in a desert, but when you go high up in the mountains, you’re surrounded by towering pine trees and rivers,” Barton says, comparing the landscapes to the Alps. Utah Lake and the Jordan River invite boating, fishing, and other water-based activities, while ski resorts are within an easy day’s trip. About five national parks are located within a four-hour drive, offering rock climbing, ATV riding, and other weekend adventures. “One of the best parts about Lehi is how it manages to feel like a rapidly growing city, but it maintains that outdoorsy feel,” says Dixon. “It’s doubled in size over the last decade, but it has the same small-town charm and access to recreation that it’s always had.” The city also opened what’s being billed as the largest playground in the state. The 85-acre Lehi City Family Park has an aviation-themed play area, walking trails, a splash pad and an amphitheater. The city also has a large population of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Lehi itself gets its name from a prophet in the Book of Mormon. Recently, the church announced plans to build an 85,000-square-foot temple on a 22-acre site a few miles from downtown.

Shopping and dining hubs in town

Lehi’s dining and shopping options cluster in several areas, with its Main Street Historic District housing some of the city’s older businesses and eateries. Thanksgiving Point combines museums, gardens, and events while also offering restaurants and shops that serve a range of tastes and interests. On the west side of town, near Crossroads Boulevard and North Redwood Road, additional retail and dining options cater to office workers from nearby tech campuses. According to Barton, many restaurants are fast-casual or counter-service, and for fine dining or extensive shopping, most head to Salt Lake City.

Getting around a growing Lehi

Lehi’s placement along I-15 provides direct routes to Salt Lake City and Provo. However, as Barton notes, rapid growth can lead to traffic congestion, and a 30-mile commute might take around an hour during peak times. There are two FrontRunner commuter train stations in Lehi, connecting riders to both Provo and Salt Lake City. Salt Lake City International Airport, about 35 miles away, ranks as the 21st busiest airport in the country, with more than 300 flights daily and a major renovation project underway.

Public schools and higher education in the area

Students in Lehi attend schools in the Alpine School District, which Niche rates as B-plus overall. The district includes more than 80 schools serving over 84,000 students. Lehi’s location allows commuting to three major universities: the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Brigham Young University in Provo, and Utah Valley University in Orem. Utah Valley University’s Lehi campus expands educational offerings, including part-time MBA and cybersecurity master’s programs.

Below average crime rates

The violent crime rate dropped in 2023 from the year before, according to FBI crime data. The same figures show property crime was on the rise, however both rates are well below the state and national averages.
