Named for the well-known park that sprawls across it, Maymont is an urban nature lover’s dream. Beyond its fantastic park space, it’s within walking distance of the James River and just a short drive to major city amenities, putting it among the city’s most charming neighborhoods. “Everyone I’ve ever sold to in Maymont has really, really loved it,” says Jenn Hart, Realtor with Coach House Realty LLC. “There’s a great sense of community, it’s very close-knit.”
Maymont is a small residential neighborhood also occupied by a large park by the same name.

Exploring Maymont Park, hiking and swimming at Texas Beach
When Richmonders hear “Maymont,” they think of the park before the neighborhood — it’s just that hard to beat the historic 100-acre green space, which attracts people from across the Richmond area. Locals spend afternoons strolling through the Italian and Japanese gardens, tour the Victorian mansion or come by in the morning to catch sight of local wildlife in its exhibits, including black bears, foxes, bison and bald eagles. The Robins Nature Center houses aquatic wildlife, from fish and alligators to river otters, and locals head to Maymont’s farm to feed domesticated animals like goats and horses. Couples often get engagement or wedding photos taken at the park, and the gardens have hosted many weddings. “If you enjoy being outside and you’re looking for a great city park, Maymont and the lakes there are just hard to beat,” says Jenny Maraghy, the team leader and broker of The Jenny Maraghy Team at Compass with over 30 years of experience selling homes in Richmond. The lakes are in William Byrd Park, another well-known spot right at the edge of Maymont.
Along the river, Texas Beach is beloved by locals for its calm water and shallow rapids, making it a popular swimming spot. Pockets of isolated sandy beaches and large, flat granite boulders offer great places for sunbathing and relaxing by the water. The North Bank Trailhead connects to the beach and offers miles of lush trails belonging to the extensive James River Park system. Created by locals to benefit the community, the Treasure Island Community Skate Park is another thriving local hub that volunteers continue to improve.
The James River runs to the south of Maymont, a popular place for swimming and other recreation.

Three-bedroom homes starting at $280,000
The grid-style streets of Maymont are lined with sidewalks and mature trees, making for a leafy, sun-dappled walk or run. Many of its Cape Cods and ranch-style homes were built around the 1940s and 1950s. Most lack driveways, relying instead on street parking — though some residents can use the alley system that runs behind the homes to squeeze into a spot behind their home. “Five years ago, you could buy one of the small bungalows that were built soon after World War II for less than $200,000,” Maraghy says. “Today, those houses are definitely more expensive.” Despite this, homes here are less than in other Richmond neighborhoods. A three-bedroom, one-bath home starts at around $280,000 and a larger, fully updated three- or four-bedroom home with two or more bathrooms can sell for as much as $580,000. “Inventory is down 23% across the board in the Richmond metro, which is as low as it’s been in quite some time,” Hart says. “The market is pressured and demand is high, so houses sell quickly.” According to Maraghy, homes here sold in an average of just four days in 2023.

Shopping and dining along West Main Street and Carytown
Maymont is highly residential, but there are plenty of restaurants a mile away on West Main Street. Sticky Rice is especially popular among college students for its fun atmosphere, signature crispy tater tots and weekly karaoke nights. For dessert, many pop over to Shyndigz for its rotating menu of elaborate cakes and pies made from scratch and served in huge slices. Carytown, a mecca of quaint local shops and restaurants, is also just 2 miles away. Many locals head there to stock up on groceries at Kroger or Ellwood Thompson’s, a locally owned natural food market.

Maymont residents rely on the Downtown Express highway to get to and from Richmond.
Nearby downtown Richmond, I-195, and U.S. Route 1
Maymont consists of smaller residential streets, but there are bus stops scattered throughout, and it only takes a few minutes to drive to Interstate 195 or U.S. Route 1. The heart of downtown Richmond, along with Virginia Commonwealth University and its nearby hospital, are all within 3 miles from home.
Popular events at Maymont Park, Dogwood Dell
“One of the things people who live in Maymont love the most is the Fourth of July fireworks at Dogwood Dell every year, which they can watch from their backyard,” Hart says. Dogwood Dell also hosts the Festival of the Arts, which features concerts, plays, musicals and dance performances throughout the summer. In the fall, locals flock to Maymont Park when it gets dark for Garden Glow, which features colorful lights and bright art. “The lines for the glow event are insane, and the whole neighborhood is so busy at that time,” says Dany Srour, the operations manager for The Maraghy Team. “And it has carnival food, drinks, things like that. They do a nice job with it.” The park hosts other events throughout the year, including Herbs Galore, a plant sale featuring over 90 local vendors. These popular events can cause overflow parking to spill out of the park’s lots and into the neighborhood’s streets, sometimes making it difficult for residents to find parking close to home.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data.
