Blending suburban and countryside living in Croisan-Illahe
Croisan-Illahe is a semi-rural Salem neighborhood that offers countryside luxury away from the busyness of the state capital. "It's a private golf course, so it is on the higher end of homes, but it's kind of a subdivision out in the country," says Shareef Hagag, a Realtor with HomeSmart Realty Group who has been selling homes for over 10 years. "Illahe is 10 minutes outside of town. You're 10 minutes just to the edge of town and then another five minutes to where you're going." Homes in the neighborhood's west end surround Illahe Hills Country Club, a scenic golf course on the banks of the Willamette River. On the east side, homes on Croisan Mountain sit high above the city and have sweeping views of the Willamette Valley. Each side of the neighborhood has its perks, but they both offer a secluded place to call home on the city's edge.
Plenty of green space in Croisan-Illahe
Croisan-Illahe's location in the Willamette Valley countryside makes it easy to access nearby recreation. Nelson Park has tennis and basketball courts, a playground and walking paths. Minto-Brown Island Park is a 1,200-acre natural area with an entrance near the neighborhood. This large city park has 29 miles of trails for walking, running or biking. There are loops that can be joined together for 5K or 10K runs. The site also has a 30-acre dog park, fishing access and approximately 300 acres of conservation area home to blue herons, rabbits and cougars.

Teeing off at Salem's first private country club
Illahe Hills Country Club is a private golf course in the neighborhood. The club was founded in the 1960s when Salem only had one golf course—the public Salem Golf Club. Today, Illahe Hills has an 18-hole, par-72 course that has hosted several events, including USGA Championships. The houses in the neighborhood are far enough from the course that it feels like a secluded, natural spot for a round of golf, with scenic views of the surrounding hills and valley. The club also has tennis, pickleball and bocce ball courts. The club's restaurant is open six days a week and serves a seasonal menu focusing on steak and seafood.
Established ranch-style homes and mountaintop estates
Croisan-Illahe has multiple sections of homes featuring different styles. Houses near Nelson Park are typically ranch-style or 1970s contemporary homes on tight lots with sidewalks and plenty of towering pines. These usually cost between $400,000 and $600,000. Heading up Croisan Mountain Drive, buyers can find sprawling Craftsman, ranch-style and French Provincial homes. These properties often have expansive views of the valley below, but they sit on relatively small lots that require less maintenance. "That neighborhood is good for somebody who wants a big house and room, but they don't want acreage. In Croisan-Illahe, really anywhere west of Skyline Road, half an acre or a third of an acre is pretty common," says Hagag. Homes on Croisan Mountain typically cost between $800,000 and $1.4 million. Houses near Illahe Hills Country Club range from late 1960s ranch-style homes to early 2000s Craftsmans. Most of them are close together on suburban streets, but properties on Deerfield Drive and El Dorado Loop are more spread out, with tall trees and meticulous landscaping. Homes under 3,000 square feet in this area cost between $500,000 and $850,000. Larger houses cost between $1 million and $1.7 million. There is a severe flood risk in much of the neighborhood, but mostly in undeveloped areas. The community receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
