Historic suburb on the outskirts of downtown Tampa
Many Florida communities have golf courses, but few of them are as intimately connected to theirs as Forest Hills is to “The Babe.” Babe Zaharias Golf Course measures a little more than 6,000 yards, but its reach extends to every corner of the neighborhood. “It’s a neighborhood with a lot of history,” says Sandra Perez, a Realtor with Mihara & Associates, Inc. The neighborhood originally was built around what was then called the Forest Hills Golf and Country Club in 1926. Mildred Ella “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias, an Olympic gold medalist, bought the course in 1949, the same year she co-founded the Ladies Professional Golf Association. After falling into disrepair for almost two decades following Zaharias’ death in 1956, the course was taken over in 1974 by the Tampa Sports Authority, which still manages it to this day. In 2002, the Forest Hills Neighborhood Association was formed specifically to help protect the course from being razed by developers. Today, the neighborhood association uses the recently remodeled clubhouse as the center of its community activities, which include Fun Fridays and holiday gatherings.
The new historical marker for the golf course was presented on March 17, 2023 in Forest Hills.

Ranches along golf-inspired street names
The streets of Forest Hills, which include golf-inspired names such as Divot Lane and Followthrough Drive, feature ranch styles typical of established Florida neighborhoods. The community’s single-family housing is more eclectic and architecturally diverse near “The Babe,” with many of the newer, larger homes featured in that area. “We have new homes being built everywhere and older homes being remodeled,” says Perez. Homes here tend to stay on the market for about a month and typically sell for between $350,000 to $650,000.
Forest Hills has street signage with golf terms in the neighborhood.

Specialized programs with Hillsborough County Schools
The neighborhood is served by Hillsborough County Public Schools. Kids may start at Forest Hills Elementary School, which gets a C-plus grade from Niche, before transitioning to Adams Middle School, which has a C. Students may then attend Chamberlain High School with a C-plus grade, which has offered a specialized culinary arts program since 2002.

Nearby attractions and natural beauty
Forest Hills residents not only have access to a historic public golf course, but several residential lakes. The largest is Lake Eckles, which is located just north of “The Babe” and is known for its stock of largemouth bass and bluegill. Forest Hills Park Community Center provides additional recreational options and offers after-school and summer camps. Just 3 miles east of the neighborhood is Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, a 335-acre amusement park with dozens of attractions and special events throughout the year.

Popular local restaurants like Gino’s close by
The neighborhood enjoys a convenient location, with retail and dining options along the Florida Avenue corridor and a direct route to downtown Tampa via Interstate 275, which forms Forest Hills’ eastern border. A quirk of the portion of Florida Avenue that runs through Forest Hills is that it is populated by an array of car dealerships, with an especially heavy concentration just south of the intersection with Fowler Avenue, another of Tampa’s primary thoroughfares. Among the dining options are neighborhood favorites Gino’s Restaurant & Bar, a locally owned Italian eatery; and Joe’s New York Diner, where the jukebox plays and breakfast is served 24 hours a day. Not surprisingly, another favorite is the clubhouse restaurant at “The Babe.”
Gino's is certainly a local favorite for residents of Forest Hills.

Proximity to Interstate 275 and bus stops
Some of Forest Hills’ amenities are within walking or biking distance, but the overall community is still mostly car-dependent. Interstate 275 runs parallel to the community and offers a direct route to downtown Tampa. There are also bus stops with daily service along North Florida Avenue.
Public Transportation is a fairly popular option in the Forest Hills neighborhood.
Forest Hills residents have quick access to interstates and other parts of the city.
