Martin Luther King Jr. School is a top-ranked, academically rigorous magnet school that provides college preparation courses, Advanced Placement and dual enrollment classes for students in seventh through 12th grade. The core academic subject courses offer students different difficulty levels in English, math, science and social studies. Electives also provide AP classes in computer science, psychology and politics. The school offers five languages students can choose from based on their interests: French, German, Mandarin Chinese, Latin and Spanish. All the languages have numerous extended learning activities ranging from honor societies and clubs to exchange programs, travel and national competitions. MLK also provides visual arts and performing arts classes to expand on the creativity of its student body. The school partners with the community through Fisk University, Vanderbilt University - Biomedical Informatics and Meharry Medical College, making it easier for students to connect with new opportunities. MLK places well in district championships in athletics such as baseball, basketball and soccer and offers a variety of other sports and clubs. It does not have its own football team but partners with nearby schools for interested students.

The academics are very rigorous - lots of APs and all honors classes. Teachers are very supportive of students' dreams and projects. However, homework can be overemphasized and build up too high.

We love MLK. My daughter is challenged by her excellent teachers at MLK. She started in 7th grade and was surprised by the rigor of the academic curriculum.
