Living in a bustling suburb by BWI
Originally getting its name from the valleys of ferns that populated this South Baltimore suburb, Ferndale today is populated by something else: commercial industry and residences. With the Baltimore/Washington International Airport to the west and big-box shopping to the east, the area has become highly trafficked. “It’s definitely loud, but it’s great for people who work at the airport,” says Nancy Smith, a Realtor at Coldwell Banker Realty with 25 years of experience in the Baltimore region. “And there’s easy and convenient access to the beltway.” Residents can take advantage of Interstate 97 which cuts through town or catch the light rail for a quick jaunt into the city, just 10 miles north.
Ferndale received its name in 1921.

Local eats on Broadway Boulevard
A short drive in any direction will bring Ferndale residents to an array of shops and eateries. On the north side at Burwood Village Center, they might grab groceries at Food Lion before picking up some pizza and pasta takeout at Italia’s Corner Cafe. Also at this shopping plaza is Illusion’s, a restaurant that’s open late serving upscale dinners with a side of craft cocktails and live entertainment. For bigger shopping excursions, locals can head east to grab essentials at Costco, Walmart and Target. Centrally located along Broadway Boulevard in town are local dining and drink options. Willy’s Kitchen serves locally sourced American breakfasts and lunch burgers, and Ferndale Tavern offers karaoke and pool to go with their full bar. Nearby, B&B Snowballs & Seafood provides the neighborhood with both fresh custard and fresh crab legs – when they’re in season.

Cape Cods, cottages, Split Levels can begin around $270,000 for 1,000-square-foot homes and rise to about $555,000 for 2,500-square-foot houses with traditional architecture.

Locals can walk or bike the 12-mile BWI Trail, which passes this equestrian center and weaves around the BWI airport.

The area I live in is filled with big chain stores and restaurants and there is no room for small local businesses. I have access to everything I need, but I wish small business entrepreneurs had better opportunities. These kinds of stores often provide better services.

When I was growing up there were very few kids to play with. Now I see there are a lot more families moving here. It's nice to see there is a great mix of older and younger families.

Minimum wage employment is up but it is barely enough to pay the bills-often part time. Fast food and chain stores hire the most.
